Are Maui Jims Better than Ray-Bans?

As an independent retailer and owner of many sunglass specialty retail stores, I would like to shed some light on this topic. We are, we breathe, we know sunglasses, and in this blog you will get the honest truth.

Since we opened our first store in 1987, we have been outfitting customers with the best sunglasses the industry has to offer. We have put thousands of great frames on thousands of great people’s faces. Some of our great frames have led to marriages and some to divorces! Some to incredible jobs and some to incredible blogs!

We are not manufacturers or dealers, we are not paid for this blog, we are not affiliated with any brand, we are just an incredible retailer with intense sunglass knowledge. We are the real McCoy! The honest truth! God himself says so!

So, are Maui Jims better than Ray-Bans?

They aren't.

At our stores we sell both and have for over 30 years. Ray-Ban does outsell Maui Jim, hands down, no questions asked. Ray-Ban is an iconic and widely popular international brand that boasts an impressive collection of classic, eclectic, and modern frames. Not all face shapes work with all styles of sunglasses, but Ray-Ban’s iconic Aviators and Wayfarers seem to do the trick for all faces.

Maui Jim is a more recent brand with less international and geographical recognition. The brand was born in the surf of Hawaiian beaches and emphasizes the importance of protecting those baby blues (or greens, browns, hazels, maybe red for some of you out there). Maui Jims are known for its polarized lenses which can be found in all its frames- men’s, women’s, sport, and metals collections.

But are Maui Jims Better than Ray-Bans?

It’s like cars! It’s a matter of preference. When comparing Ray-Bans and Maui Jims, you have to consider how much you want to spend, how good do you want to look, what function do you want your sunglasses to serve? What you like and how comfortable you want to be, it’s all up to you.

The lens and the material the lens is made out of determines the UV blockage. UV PROTECTION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF SUNGLASSES. I only yelled that because we encounter a lot of people who think otherwise. The UV protection is the same whether polarized, or non-polarized. Ray-Ban and Maui Jim lenses both provide UV protection, and that is what counts.

If you are looking for polarized, Maui Jim is your go-to. It’s one of the few sunglass brands where the entire line is polarized. Anyone on, in, or by the water should check out a pair of polarized lenses. But that’s the only time polarized sunglasses are essential. If you are a pilot, or someone that spends a lot of time looking at computer screens, digital screens, cell phones, LCD screens, then polarized isn’t what you want. A non-polarized lens will suffice, and save you $$$. Ray-Ban offers polarized, as well as non-polarized sunglasses.
